Is summer a bad time to reflect on your career? How to get ahead of the game.
You may think its a bad time to reflect on your career and update your professional profile, what with the summer holidays coming up, kids off school, businesses slowing down (or are they). But for some (if not all) its just as busy, for the next few weeks anyway, so why not get ahead of the game and get yourself ready to promote yourself now or in September.
Check all of your social media accounts – do they paint a coherent picture of your professional self? Ideally you should use the same photo and bio across each account. Speaking of photos, if yours is more than a couple of years’ old, it’s time for a refresh. Aim for a head and shoulder shot in flattering lighting against a neutral background. Look smart but no need to go for the full-on interview look – you want to seem approachable. Make sure the photo looks like you – there’s nothing more disconcerting if you meet someone for the first time and they look nothing like their photo – it can seem almost dishonest.
Become a Twitter pro
We have seen people get jobs this way. Well maybe not a job but a connection and then an interview which has resulted in a job. Twitter can be good to identify influential individuals in your field. Engage with what is being said. Make your own comments. Demonstrate your knowledge, without sounding arrogant. You don’t just have to tweet about work – show what a rounded person you are, but just remember who could be watching. Twitter is a powerful tool for getting noticed so use it to your advantage. Have some posts up your sleeve
Think ahead to what you want to post on social media. Whether it is a quick update to your network on LinkedIn or more in-depth blog posts on your area of specialism, it is worth honing your writing skills (there are plenty of tips online for areas such as headline writing, for example), then check out an industry calendar to see what your network might be interested in.
Review your CV
Take some time to review your CV. You may not actively be seeking a new job, but it’s always worth keeping this key document up to date. This ensures that you are ready to respond quickly to any opportunities that might come your way – regular updates are also easier to manage than having to do a wholesale overhaul of your CV when you’re keen to move on.
Evaluate your job search
If you are still looking or have been unsuccessful, work out why, ask for feedback from companies you may have interviewed at or from recruitment agencies. Take time to review it and see where some of the problems might lie. Look into training courses or mentorship that might help you get to where you want to be.
Check in with your recruiter regularly
Check in with your recruiter regularly and let them know that you are looking for new opportunities and are available for interviews. If your not available let them know too. Although summer season is coming there will be plenty of recruiters and firms still recruiting. What might slow down is the speed of feedback or setting up interviews. Remember, getting in early while others are still getting back into the swing of things could give you an advantage!
